Frequently asked Questions
What can physiotherapy help with?
Physiotherapy can help with pain, injury, stiffness, and movement problems affecting muscles, joints, tendons, and nerves. This includes sports injuries, work or lifestyle-related pain, postural issues, post-surgical rehabilitation, and persistent or recurring pain. Treatment focuses on reducing pain, restoring movement, and improving strength and function.
What is dry needling?
Dry needling is a technique that uses very fine, sterile needles to target tight or sensitive muscle areas (often called trigger points). It can help reduce pain, improve muscle function, and restore movement. Dry needling is not acupuncture and is based on modern anatomical and scientific principles.
Should I see a physiotherapist or my GP?
You can see a physiotherapist first — no referral is required. Physiotherapists are trained to assess, diagnose, and manage musculoskeletal conditions. If your symptoms suggest something that needs medical investigation or specialist care, your physiotherapist will refer you to your GP or appropriate healthcare provider.
Do I need a scan (X-ray, MRI, or ultrasound)?
In many cases, scans are not required. A thorough clinical assessment often provides more useful information than imaging alone. Scans are only recommended when they are likely to change management or rule out serious conditions. Your physiotherapist can advise if imaging is necessary.
What happens during an initial physiotherapy assessment?
Your initial appointment includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and goals, followed by a physical examination of movement, strength, and function. From there, a clear diagnosis and treatment plan are developed, which may include manual therapy, dry needling, exercise prescription, and self-management strategies.
